It's the Multiple Document Interface (MDI) and it has 
disappeared to make our lives simpler (HA!). I miss it
too! It's even gone from MS Word, where you used to be able to tile several documents in the same window and drag n drop
between 'em. Now you have separate instances of Word, 
Explorer, and all the other MS apps.

The absolute worst implementation of the Single Document
Interface (SDI), however, was in VB6 (and I haven't worked
in VB for a while, so don't know if it's still broken). When
you opened a second doc, you'd get two instances of VB with
both docs loaded into each instance! Jeez, what a mess!
