When I'm acting in my webmaster persona <g>, I get to decide if people registering on our Web site are going to be granted permission to access certain pages that are restricted to customers and prospects.
The registration form asks for First Name, Last Name, Desired Username, Desired Password, Title, and Company Name, in that order. (It also asks for other information, but I'm focusing on these first six fields.)
So the Title field is way down there by the Company Name field. separated from the person's name by a couple of unrelated fields.
Americans understand that the "Title" requested is the name of their position within the company. People in the UK and EU almost invariably--and people in other parts of the world very frequently--take Title to mean Honorific and fill in the field with Mr. or Dr. or Ms.
I suppose I could just add an Honorific field in front and throw away the data, because I have no interest in capturing it. But I'd like a suggestion for a more elegant solution. Should I change the field label to "Position" or "Title/Position"?
Has anyone else ever run into this, and, if so, how did you resolve it?
