This is almost exactly what happened to me 12 months ago!

I'll reply next week with answers to your specific questions if you want (I
have a deadline this evening and no time to give them justice right now).
John and Sean have already given excellent advice and there's not too much
to add. I just thought I'd let you know that you're not only person this has
happened to, and that a sense of shock is natural but it will pass.

There is one reassuring fact. You *know* they need and appreciate your
work - if they didn't, you would be out. Sobering, but reassuring.
