Yes, we know. But the paper I pointed to isn't about
"fonts." It's about the fundamental technology of
rendering type on-screen. I suppose that's "relatively
unimportant" too, in the same way that internal combustion
is relatively unimportant to designing an automobile. But
where does that leave all that fine talk about having
a deep understanding of the technology?

Microsoft didn't become what it is by focusing
on "relatively arcane things," but by aggressively
marketing technologies that lots of people are willing
to pay for. And that includes easier-to-use computer
interfaces.

And yes, they are out to make money. So am I.
That, I'd venture a guess, is why we're here.
