TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been a technical writer for 15+ years (boy does that make me feel
OLD.) Early on, I was a consultant (employee of a consulting company) with
the title of "Technical Writer" or whatever they needed to call me to get
me in the door. When I got tired of bouncing around every 3 to 6 months, I
applied for a job at UPS. It is a great place to work, but there are some
quirks. The biggest quirk is that they call their tech. writers "Methods
Analysts".
I was promoted to Sr. level after 3 years as a Methods Analyst. In that
time, I had to prove that I could consistently and competently accomplish
the following: write and edit various types of documentation, develop and
manage documentation project plans that were a subset of the overall
project plan (including estimating work effort, deliverables, manhours,
etc.), manage and edit other writers, design style guides, provide Project
Leaders with guidance on the types of documentation a project required,
and so on. I started as a writing resource, and ended as an integral part
of the software development effort. The title gave me a 20% salary
increase, and even more important, a grade increase so I was eligible to
receive company stock.
