RE: "cleaning" a Word style?

I use that technique when necessary. But in a complex, 150-page,
multi-section doc with cover art, headers, footers, and all kinds of bells
and whistles, I really don't want to rebuild at that level if there are just
a few offending styles.

I just want to be able to take a given style and "shake the Etch-a-Sketch"
so that I have a clean slate. 

So far everybody's suggestion is to move to a new doc, and I do that a lot
when I need to really overhaul a doc. But it seems amazing/scary that I
can't simply *fix* the original doc. But then, this IS Word...

If you're talking about a specific document, what I do is save the document 
as text, to wipe out all the formatting, then open a  blank WORD 
document/template, then open the text doc in that window and apply all my 
own styles.
