Keith Cronin added more details: <<When modifying the style itself, not the
text, by selecting Format, Style... (or by clicking the Style icon I added
to my toolbar), I often encounter styles with many attributes I do not
need.>>

Well, my second paragraph explains one way to fix the problem, but there's
no magic bullet I'm aware of. If you don't want to apply a whole new
template, open the Styles dialog box and click the Organizer button instead.
This lets you copy individual styles rather than entire templates. If you've
got a "Body text" style in (say) Normal.dot, and the current document has a
"Body text 1" that happens to be a real mess, simply copy the Body text
style into the current document. Once the style is copied, you can edit the
definitions for Body text 1 so that the "based on" field refer back to Body
text. This should update the properties for Body text 1 automatically when
you apply the changes. (Better still, if you've got the Body text 1 style
that you want in Normal.dot, copy that instead.)
