Um. I *am* a software developer, among other things, and software
developers are the people I spend most of my time talking to (at least
when it comes to technical matters). Those are the people who most
pooh-pooh Slashdot, IME. If you think that software developers respect
Slashdot, you must hang out in a markedly different community from mine.

For what it's worth, I find /. useful as a source of pointers to interesting tech-related stories. One of my daily tasks is to surf a bunch of tech sites for stories relating to security, privacy, and cryptography, and /. is one of the sites I check.

In general, I don't have a lot of use for the commentary, though.
