I expect there's some good internal reason, so I suppose it's rude to suggest, but I always wonder why--since the Reader is free--they don't just upgrade to the current version? Isn't that better than making everyone jump through hoops?

I gave much the same reply off-list, but there are a couple of caveats that need to be added to your suggestions. See below:

This does not always work. It depends on how the PDF was created in the first place. For example, if the PDF was created with security turned on to prevent changing the document (or, obviously, printing the document), you will not be able to execute this step. Also, some things get munged on redistilling. You will probably lose bookmarks, as well, although I haven't tested this.
