OK, here's other side of story.
Writer works for small startup and consistently works 60 weeks. Must do her
editing and polishing at home on weekends, as there's no time in schedules
to do during the work week.
Writer's manager goes on maternity leave. Company lays off half the
department. Writer not only asked to assume manager's responsibilities, but
those of laid-off writers. Writer now working at office 7 days a week and
keeps changes of clothes at office so that she can sleep on the couch when
she's too tired to drive home safely. Cats boarded for a month, at writer's
expense, because writer cannot take care of them during worst of "crunch".
Writer keeps up this schedule for 4 months. Then more layoffs. All employees
required to take 10% salary cut, for the good of the company. Writer asked
to postpone planned vacation to New York, for the good of the product, which
means giving up 2 center orchestra seats for The Producers with original
cast. Company promises to make it up to writer the next year and thanks the
writer for her devotion to company and project. More layoffs again.
Writer takes a week off for Christmas. Writer returns to work January 2.
Employees told company is in trouble and there will be layoffs by the end of
February, but it is not known who will go. Manager tells writer not to
worry, as the work cannot be done without writer.
Writer laid off on February 15 with two weeks severance pay.
Writer is now on unemployment in a state with 9% unemployment rate.
Suzanne, who at least now has some time to be with her cats.
