Another one is "Running Microsoft Powerpoint 2000" by Stephen W. Sagman, Microsoft Press; ISBN 1572319410. I did the technical editing on it, which involved testing every procedure, so I learned a lot about Powerpoint in the process. (But I don't get a royalty from sales.)

Anybody know any good books for getting some advanced PPT skills together
in a hurry? I know the basics, but will need to become a power user if
this assignment falls on me.

I've searched the archives, and joined the PPT user's group, so the next
logical step is Amazon.....

The one I keep around here is "Using PowerPoint 2000 - Special Edition" from Que books.

There's enough in there to get you up to speed on most of PowerPoint's more useful features.
