John/Bruce,
as a getting to be old-timer myself, my guess would be that 'prior to the
Nineties,' MOST tech writers came directly from engineering fields -rather
than having been trained & educated (primarily) as a technical communicator.
This shift I would also attribute to the influence of STC on the profession.

Speaking from personal experience, I have a college background of the
sciences...mostly biological and chemical, including aa great deal of
lab wortk. Even 30 years later, I find the experience gained from lab
work is a major benefit to what I do on a daily basis.
Its the old scientific hypothesis thing. Formulate hyposthesis,
investigate to verify or disapprove, refine hypothesis,
re-investigare...
Same thing in writing.
Write instruction the way I think it shoulds work, prove or
disapprove, refine work, prove ot disapprove, etc.
