I took geology at a community college in Hot Springs, and we had a lab portion: the teacher took photographs of rocks and nailed them to trees around the hiking trail and made us go through and identify them.

I guess you couldn't consider that a misguided technical communication approach to the subject in a way, but sometimes you just need to get some hands on experience.

I too am an Arts graduate, and would suggest that Bruce missed a very
important course, Geology without a lab. At my university, this was often
referred to as "Rocks for Jocks".
