In the example I gave earlier about the VB code sample. A friend of mine interviewed with the same company the week before and refused to attempt reading that code. He told them he was a writer and not a programmer and did not need to know VB. I, OTOH, took a stab at figuring it out and even got the gist of it. Guess which one of us was their first pick for that job.

It's all about attitude. If you go in thinking that it's an insult to your dignity to be required to take a test (don't laugh; I've interviewed people like that), then you've lost the job before you even get there. If you go in thinking that this is a tool to show how great you'll be on the job, then you've probably won the job before the test begins.
