Re: job interview with tests

At three different companies, I've been given tests that involve:

* Writing the procedure for wrapping a gift (to be done on the spot using
the interviewer's computer. I didn't get the job, but I think my test was
fine.)
* Editing various blocks of text (this was a take-home test and I decided
not to pursue working for that company, but not because of the test)
* Something very akin to an IQ test (I was asked back for a second interview
on the spot, but that company did a large layoff on Sept. 11 and cancelled
the interview)

When I was involved with hiring, I constructed a test that examined the
user's knowledge of basic HTML (provided a very simple text page and asked
the user to write the tags for it), a question about the user's favorite
search engines and why they were his or her favorite, and a question about
what cascading style sheets (CSS) were. In each case, I was not looking for
perfect answers, but for an indication the user could produce something
within a 20-minute period, knew basic HTML, and could construct logical,
explanatory sentences.
