Oh, I seriously doubt that anyone said ethics would be forgotten. I
know I didn't. It's unethical to allow my family to be hurt, to let my
child starve or go without health care, if there's anything I can do to
prevent it. That's ethics. It's not that ethics go flying out the
window, just that there are ethical *requirements* and ethical
*preferences*, and sometimes you don't realize it's only a preference
until it runs headfirst into a requirement.

<< However, such naive cynicism ignores the fact that some people - a
minority, probably - will inconvenience themselves for the sake of their
beliefs. >>

Did you really mean "inconvenience themselves?" I'm not talking about
matters of convenience, and I doubt those you're referring to did
either. I inconvenience myself regularly for the sake of my own beliefs.
Surely you can see the difference between inconveniencing myself and
allowing my loved ones to *suffer*, not just feel "inconvenienced."

Priorities, Bruce. Priorities. I've got them, you've got them. Let's
hope we don't get tested.
