I've been laid off three times from three different defense contractors. Twice I knew it was coming because our government contract had been awarded to another company and we were just biding our time. The third time was completely unexpected but brought me much joy. I was grateful to find a job so soon after my last layoff; however, the work was boring and required a one-hour commute each morning to a dreary office park where we contractors were stuck in a chilly, underlit trailer office. About two months into the project, the company president showed up one morning to announce that the government had decided our work duplicated the efforts of another project. After taking a minute to absorb this information, I blurted out: "You mean we don't have to come back here anymore?"
