I've been in the situation of given notice and being shown the door that day.

They did agree to keep me on for the notice period, two weeks. But, I ended up leaving a week later. I didn't say anything about the situation to my coworkers, so finishing out the two weeks should not have been a problem. But, that was the nature of that employer.
