I'd have to agree with Andrew on this one. Very few clients are going to be
willing to pay lump sums up front and your best protection is a well
written, signed contract.

One alternative, however, might be to bill at regular intervals, say weekly
or bi-weekly. Or to consider a time and materials arrangement.
