Several careers a go, I worked as a substance abuse counselor. Inevitably I
would get a client in a group or individual setting who had read a little
Emerson or Thoreau and try to frame his pot use in terms of "civil
disobedience". This "civil disobedience" behavior, however, usually involved
the usual precautions against getting caught.
My response was usually "fine, but do it on the courthouse steps with media
present, and prepare to go to jail. Smoking dope in your den at home isn't
part of the concept."
Never had any takers.
Disobeying a law simply because you don't find it convenient, or because it
gets in the way of profits, is hardly ethical (or courageous).
