I will second Gordon's advice. Don't plan - do! I started my company in
1995 and didn't have a solid business plan until very recently. A business
plan is not necessary, you need to prove that you can start and run a
business first before you plan out all your growth and marketing.
The best marketing in the universe is good, hard work and happy clients. I
spent barely a dime on marketing until about 1999. All my clients from
1995 - 1999 came to me via referral. Most still do.
Yes, you should pick a name and design a web site - but don't go
overboard. You are not going to be a billion dollar a year company
overnight. Just get a basic site up and running that emphasizes your
strengths.
As for lawyers and accountants - get some business first. You can hash out
the details later. You should get some boiler plate contract. There are
NUMEROUS resources on the web for legal documents. Just find a good
contract and modify it to suit your needs. Then run it by a lawyer for
$200.
Lastly, if you are forming a company with a partner, draw up a contract
that states EXACTLY what each of you owns. This will save you a lot of
grief if you and the partner have a falling out.
