If you really want a view of what's happening, do a "metro search" on Dice for "technical writer" in various cities. Very enlightening. Seattle and Boston look good, Los Angeles (where I am) does not. And so on.

It's not media hype when I'm seriously considering taking an entry-level indexer's job at less than half my last salary, because that's all that's on offer. (Cross your fingers for me. I had a great interview yesterday for a great Senior Techwhirler position.) It wasn't bad in December, it's pretty sucky right now.

Nothing sells like bad news and someone else's misery...

Here in Central Texas (the Greater Austin area), 9300 jobs have been lost
since January 1 (the vast majority of them in the tech sector); however,
9500 new positions have been created, yielding a +200 gain. The market for
technical writers has ramped down a bit (more true for permanent positions,
less so for contract), but it's still alive. Tech writers with the requisite
skills and knowledge are not having too much of a problem finding work.
