Something sort of similar happened to me when I applied for my current job.
The job description (technical writer who uses the robots and then documents
them) was different from what they interviewed me for (write online
documentation and author in HTML).

In my case, HR has a standard job description for everyone in the company
depending on the department they work for (I think this is ISO-related), and
apparently that job description was posted nearly word-for-word on the STC
list I was on at the time even though the hiring manager had slightly
different requirements for the position.

My resume' must have made it to the hiring manager's desk, because they
called me in for an interview specifically because of my online writing
experience.

This is why I would never eliminate a job right off the bat based on the job
description.
