Here in Central Texas (the Greater Austin area), 9300 jobs have been lost since January 1 (the vast majority of them in the tech sector); however, 9500 new positions have been created, yielding a +200 gain. The market for technical writers has ramped down a bit (more true for permanent positions, less so for contract), but it's still alive. Tech writers with the requisite skills and knowledge are not having too much of a problem finding work.
