Kristin has a 500 page Word document that needs to be
imported into RoboHelp. She's having trouble managing the big Word
file and asked if another page layout program, such as Quark, Ventura,
or PageMaker would be better. She needs to import the information that
is currently in Word into RH.
Kristin, your best bet when using RoboHelp is to keep your source
documents in Word. If you think Word gives you problems, just wait
until you try to import a Ventura or PageMaker file into RoboHelp!
There are no words to describe the anguish of having to reformat the
entire imported file. If you are bound and determined to forsake
Word, there are other tools (and many other compatibility issues)
to be considered, like FrameMaker and the strategies for converting
FrameMaker files to help format (I do not recommend RoboHelp for
this task).
You can try some proven techniques for limiting your pain with Word
instead: break up the big document into several smaller ones, improve
your system performance through upgrades, link to graphic files
instead of importing them, etc. All kinds of advice exists for making
Word behave better. There are even some nice email newsletters that
discuss this, including Woody's Office Watch http://www.woodyswatch.com and Word Tips http://www.VitalNews.com/WordTips/. I recommend both publications.
