Unfortunately, the dot com investment boom ate up money that used to go to
software startups. There aren't that many out there. I was surprised to find
this to be the case when I moved to Austin last July. 

The other unfortunate happening is that people are now buying computation
rather than computers. And, the software markets are tied very closely to
the hardware markets. 

As far as peer-to-peer, viral marketing goes, it works for software where it
didn't work for most dot com, website-based functionality. And, the
conclusions being drawn relative to the failure of the dot coms is being
applied to the software industry. Dot com economics is very different from
software industry economics. How these two very different businesses got
tangled up in one pile is beyond me.
