I've just been doing exactly the same with CAD drawings and electonic
schematics created in Axcell.
You'll probabley need to play around with the way that the lines are drawn
before the export process begins.
Fonts are fun. Some will be right first time while others will need to be
converted from hollow lined characters to the normal filled variety. Others
still will come out as a CAD type font even if the original used TTF or
similar. Finally things tend to get moved around. Some items may start to
overlap and may need adjusting in the original/(copy of original).
Get the draughtsmen to purge the CAD file before you get it. This will take
out all of the invisible junk that AutoCAD saves but doesn't use. From what
I can gather, CAD saves all editing to allow backtracking to a clean page.
If not purged this will be exported as part of the file.
WMF are good. They let you take a CAD drawing apart line by line.
Alternatively, even in Word you can select all and change the line widths,
scale, recolour etc.
EPS is good for accurate copies but on my machine with illustrator 7, EPS to
pdf tended to make it choke with too much data.
As proof that this all works, my last work was converted from a full scale
A1 plot down to an A3 pdf page that was still readable even at this much
reduced scale. The pdf itself could of course be scaled the other way and
components were still sharp at full magnification.
