Explain the situation just as you did here,
emphasizing that it was not a draft, but rather a
sharing of information in order to help the SME and
yourself get on the same page. If these people can't
understand that, then you have bigger problems than
this little rule infraction. IMO, what you did was
practical and perfectly acceptable.
