I definitely agree with this! I taught myself HTML back in '95 by looking
at other people's Web pages, copying the code into a text editor, changing
it, and seeing what I came up with.

A few years back I tried using one of the early versions of MS FrontPage,
but it created more problems than it solved. Over time, I got a copy of
Dreamweaver (it became the corporate standard), but I still do a lot of
code-tweaking in the HTML preview window. I have trouble getting ordered
lists and bulleted lists to work the way I want in Dreamweaver, and
sometimes the only way to fix it is to play with the HTML.

Right now we're in the process of converting our documentation from
Interleaf to XML. Having a good understanding of plain old HTML has been a
big help to me. I have an advantage over other people in my department who
don't understand how markup languages work.
