Hi Jane,

You would think that computer translation helps us but it doesn't. For 
example, if I'm translating File (as in the menu) from English to Spanish, 
I'll get 2 possible translations: Fichero and Archivo. But let's not forget 
about the verb. Which one is correct? If I'm an experienced translator 
accustomed to translating in that industry, then I know the correct one.

However, if I'm some "look-at-me-I'm-bilingual-so-I-can-be-a-translator" 
schmoe, trouble is imminent.

People think that "formal" means a language without using expressions. In an 
English business letter, we use "sincerely" as a closing. Sure, 
"sincerement" and "sinceramente" exist in French and Spanish respectively. 
However, are those the proper closings for a business letter? The MT can 
churn out these possibilities but it's only the experienced human translator 
that can decide the proper use.
