I've attended and spoken at Help University, IEEE PCS, and many others
outside the tech comm/computer industry. From discussions with other
experience presenters and senior members, STC offers a broader range of
topics, but overall those topics don't drill down very deep. Help
University, WinWriters, and even the IEEE PCS to a certain degree, offer a
narrower focus and lots of depth. Specific, hard-hiting, detailed
information with immediate applicability. Yes, you have fewer speakers and
very little overlap (unlike the STC that may have 5 or 6 presentations on
the same topic) at these other more expensive conferences, but it's been my
experience that I come away with more of what I need, even after presenting.
After last year's STC conference, after 4 presentations and a roundtable, I
felt like I left a lot on the table, and that's when I started having second
thoughts about continued participation in the annual conference.
