Confirm that you have version 4.05. If you have 4.0, order the 4.05 CD from Adobe and wait until it arrives.
Find your original Acrobat 3 box. Locate the product serial number and keep it handy. You will need the serial number from Acrobat 3 to install Acrobat 4. (I'm assuming you got the upgrade. If you bought new, then use the serial number that came with Acrobat 4.)
Uninstall Acrobat 3.
Install the Acrobat 4 upgrade.
Check whether the version you have is 4.05a or 4.05b. If it is a, go to the Adobe Web site and download the update patch. Install it (takes about ten seconds once you download it).
Start Distiller. Select the "Print Optimized" settings. Close Distiller.
Start Distiller again (Print Optimized is now your default setting.) Go through all of the Job Options settings and the Compatibility setting, tweaking until you are satisfied with the kind of results you get. Save the settings, giving them a new name. Close and restart Distiller. Your new settings are now your default settings.
Be sure you install the PDFMaker macros for Office. If you have the option of not installing PDFWriter, I suggest you do not install it.
