The company probably uses IE exclusively, and had an
in-house team develop their webpage. Everything looked
great until someone when home and opened the page up
in Netscape.

I've seen similar messages. Usually, they allow for
any post-3.0 version of any browser. However, I've
seen the message "optimized for Internet Explorer 5"
as a button so the visitor can go get the browser. The
problem with this is, of course, that they are
assuming that visitor's system will handle the upgrade
(I just upgraded my work system (a Pentium 166 system
to Netscape 4.73, and that's probably the best I can
ever do here without upgrading the system).

Some sites don't have the message but just won't work
well unless you use a specific browser. Again, this
was probably the one that was used in the development
of that site.

My own incomplete website has been tested on the
latest versions of both browsers, but not on earlier
ones - simply because I don't have access to them.
(BTW, comments are welcome - I know there are bugs,
and I'm trying to work them out).

Now that we're past the Great Browser War and IE has
been declared the winner, I just imagine we'll start
seeing more and more content developed strictly for IE.
