That reminds me of a woman who wore cut-off shorts and flip flops (sorry, I
don't know the real name, but they're *very* casual shoes) to an interview for
an executive secretary position. The person telling this story assumed she was
just extremely stupid. Another person hearing the story pointed out that she
probably knew exactly what she was doing -- she was probably collecting
unemployment and wanted to make sure she did not get the job. And this relates
to tech writing because it shows you should never assume you know what people
are thinking. You've probably heard the saying that you should not attribute to
malice what can just as easily be blamed on stupidity... unfortunately, the
opposite is often true.
