Something I've used to collect multiple referals:
At any position, you deal with multiple people at
diferent levels of the corporation.
Who says that a referal must come from your direct
supervisor?
I have a couple of contracts where my immediate supv
wasn't even asked if I could use them. In most cases,
within a couple of weeks before leaving (about the
same time I hand in my notice, I'll approach everyone
that I've had a particulary good relationship with and
ask them if I can use them as a reference.
Also, even before that time comes, since everyone know
that a contractor is hired for a finite period of
time, upon a particularly good project outcome,I'll
ask a person if I can use them when my contract ends,
even if that period is months away.
Did you maybe do a special project for a VP not
associated with your department? How about the manager
of someone who you bailed out? Maybe you don't get
along with your manager, but if the department has an
assist manager, that asst manager may take a perverse
thrill in recommending someone at the expense of their
boss.
In one position, even though I reported to the Dir of
Engineering (who gave me a glowing reference), I
walked away with a reference from the Manager of
Accounting, a Marketing Product Manager, and the
Network Administrator.
This is especialy valuable since I may not know who I
am going to report to at future contract and I know I
have a diverse selection of references to allow a
future interviewer to talk with "his/her kind".
