(A note related to my recent message re: Acrobat Help)
With some PS drivers, in conjunction with specific settings/fonts,
driver-level subsetting can result in missing characters when PDFs
are merged in Acrobat (Insert/Replace Page operations).
One such example is Xerox Docutech 135PS2 on WinNT, where with some
fonts subsetting takes place but Distiller does not identify the
fonts as being subset (not sure who is to blame for this - driver or
Distiller).
In each PDF, font subsets are different (based on the characters
actually used). When combining two PDFs with differently subset fonts
(which Acrobat does not see as subset fonts), "random" characters
are missing in the combined PDF.
