i am the lone writer here, and what's more, i've been told not to have
anybody look at my work except the programmer. i've struggled with this
description forever-- and although i keep getting closer to how i want it
to read, it still sounds awkward. does anybody have any suggestions?

this is basically a search and retrieval, where the user supplies the
name. what is different is that the first time using this particular
search, the user can only input the name (or a portion thereof) and the
search is conducted. after this initial pass, the user can then modify the
search to include local operators (i also have a problem with that
terminology-- but that is a different story........)

this is what i have so far..........

"The Common Name Search is used to retrieves entries in the PDF based upon
their common name. Every entry that contains the common name as shown in
the input textbox is retrieved. Once this initial search has been
conducted and a set of entries has been retrieved, the local operators
(Not, Contains/Exactly) can be used to modify the search. The entries that
are retrieved are dependent on both the common name and the choice of the
local operator."

TIA for any and all suggestions
