It doesn't. You just have to find your market.

I don't use FrameMaker. I own it, but I've never used it on a contract.
I've never needed to, so I've never learned it.

I don't write online help. I own RoboHELP, but again, I've never used it.

I'm getting into designing web pages, so I'm learning HTML etc. But that's
because I'm interested in branching out, not because it's necessary for how
I make my living.

In almost 8 years of freelancing, the longest stretch I've ever been out of
work was 6 weeks. I write hardcopy documentation -- much of it for oil
companies and engineering firms.
