Word 97 Tables of Content

I'm trying to learn a better method for creating TOCs in Word. I currently
know of two methods and both are less than ideal:

1. Use Word's built in TOC feature.

With this method, I like that you can create a TOC instantly based on the
document's current headings and that when you change a heading, the TOC
automatically changes. I don't like that if you create a hyperlink between a
TOC entry and a heading, that link disappears if you rename the heading. The
automatically generated TOCs are ugly, too.

2. Use hyperlinks and bookmarks

Along with having the same problem as #1, this method requires you to
manually create each link between TOC entries and headings set as bookmarks.

Is there another way or am I missing something in the methods above? I'd
like my TOCs to be created automatically and to retain their hyperlinks when
headings are changed. If I got these two wishes, I could live with ugly
TOCs.

Thanks for your help!
