The square root sign can be displayed using &radic; or &#8730;

My copy of Navigator 4.61 accepts &#8730; but does not understand &radic;
(IE5 does support it).

But it is not as simple as that. It appears that you have to tell Netscape
to use Unicode (View -> Character Set -> Unicode (UTF-8), but it will not
take any notice if your page already specifies any other character set with
a META tag.
