Robin,
At BellSouth Cellular Corp., the overall management of the intranet is done by the Public Relations dept., but they have very little to do with each "sub-site" within the intranet.

My work group is one of several with their own sub-sites. We are responsible for content and programming. The only involvement from the PR group is that we use templates they've provided, and we adhere to their simple rules (no Java and no DHTML--presumably these decisions were made to preserve bandwidth and to make sure people with old systems in outlying offices wouldn't be left out in the cold).

As I understand it, here's the reasoning behind letting us have control of our own intranet pages:
1) PR doesn't have the resources to manage all these sub-sites;
2) since the pages are accessed only by people within the co., they're not considered as sensitive as those available to the general public;
3) we know the technical content of the subject matter we're working with, and PR doesn't!
