I want to thank everyone for your suggestions, both print and online
resources, and the offers to check a book on your desk for me.

So far, no joy on the phrase I'm looking for, which btw is "neck of the
woods." But a lot of wonderful suggestiosn for books -- I'll pull them
together and post them back to the list, after I've been to the bookstore
tonight!

Thanks again -- you guys are the best!

-Rebecca

Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable is good. There is a 1995 edition
available from Amazon.com. I have an older version at home that I have found
useful and interesting. However, I don't know whether it would have what you
are looking for.

I've been struggling over this for a couple of days, and then it occurs to
me that you guys might have good information.

I'm looking for a decent slang/idiom dictionary that gives the etymology of
unusual and slang words and phrases. I've found one so far in a local
bookstore -- it gives the meaning, but not where the phrase or term comes
from, which is what I'm after here.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Signed,

Desperate.
