I found that one reason to use hyphenated page numbering
in .pdf documents is precisely because Acrobat always
numbers the pages consecutively. The trick is having each
chapter as an individual .pdf file. The same goes for any
front matter, appendices, index, etc, numbered independantly.

For example, there might be the following files:
Front.pdf, numbered i, ii, iii on the pages, and 1-3 by Acrobat.
Chapter1.pdf numbered 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 on the pages, and 1,2,3 by Acrobat.
Chapter2.pdf numbered 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 on the pages, and 1,2,3 by Acrobat.
Chapter3.pdf numbered 3-1, 3-2, 3-3 on the pages, and 1,2,3 by Acrobat.
...
AppendixA.pdf numbered A-1, A-2, A-3 on the pages, and 1,2,3 by Acrobat.
Index.pdf numbered i-1, i-2, i-3 on the pages, and 1,2,3 by Acrobat.

Not only will the page number presented by Acrobat correspond to
the regular page number (minus the prefix), having the chapters in
separate files makes the Acrobat Search feature much more useful.
Finally, create a common set of bookmarks for all the files, so that
the bookmarks look the same no matter which file the reader is in, and
the reader can quickly jump to any file.
