I was reading about AOL (America On Line) trying to copyright
their phrase "You Have Mail". They are sueing AT&T over this
alleged infringement of what anyone might hear when they arrive
at home or the office.

There must be some minimum of what can be copyrighted. A letter
of the alphabet can't be copyrighted.
