While a mentor or two wouldn't hurt, may I suggest using one of the many on-
disk tutrials out there? Often these explain the underlying physical
structures and other elements in addition to teaching you particular
instructions. You can do them in your own time and get a structured
introduction to the fundamentals - particularly important in a treacherous
language like C.

It's certainly a great thing for anyone who wants to understand programming to
do - C is the 'Latin' for many other programming languages out there.
