Subject:Re: Bad Behavior in Workplace (was Ugly Incident) From:Beth Agnew <bagnew -at- INSYSTEMS -dot- COM> Date:Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:58:05 -0400
Steven Feldberg wrote in part: "Who is to say what is unacceptable in the
workplace? The locker room of an NFL football team at half-time is, to my
understanding of the term, a
``workplace.'' unquote.
There is a different between an enthusiastic, energetic workplace, and one
that condones, encourages and fosters bad behavior. Bad behavior is never
acceptable, and I don't care who you are or where you work -- if it
belittles, denigrates, offends, intimidates, frightens, or otherwise harms
the people who work there, it is just plain wrong. Abusive language is
wrong, every time.
The more we excuse it, the more it is going to occur. We must individually
and collectively establish standards and boundaries, and refuse to accept
any behavior that cross the line.
As for bad behavior leading to more, better quality work being done, I
sincerely doubt that. There is always a cost.
We do need some absolutes. It's the "anything goes" policies that cause
trouble. There is no audience for which bad behavior is an appropriate form
of communication.
