TITLE: Technical Writer
DEPARTMENT: Marketing
SECTION: Technical Publications
PURPOSE OF JOB
Develop and edit user and installation manuals and other technical
publications for full range of DSC products. Create other written
materials as specified by supervisor/manager, including training and
presentation materials.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Create documentation plans for all assigned projects.
Assemble source material and specifications required to develop various
types of product documentation, including manuals, on-line help files,
tutorials. Edit/revise existing product documentation.
Manage documentation cycle for assigned products (i.e. research,
writing, presentation and graphic concepts, technical editing, testing,
and production).
Establish appropriate technical levels for presentation of textual
material and graphic concepts.
Ensure consistency and appropriateness of terminology and style.
Develop required product drawings/illustrations.
Recommend documentation changes consistent with enhanced usability,
productivity, and quality.
Plan and develop procedures for testing and evaluating accuracy and
usability, based in part on analysis of past publication successes (and
failures). Coordinate and conduct user testing of created materials.
Assign and verify work of other staff, as required.
Comply with all workplace operating and environmental, health and safety
procedures and guidelines.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SPECIALIZED SKILLS
Education and Experience:
3 year relevant college diploma, and
2 years technical writing experience
or, equivalent combination of education and experience
Specialized Skills:
Ability to collaborate well with colleagues within and
outside of the Marketing Department
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a
fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
Detailed knowledge and demonstrated ability in the use
of the English language in a technical environment, including the
ability to tailor communications to a variety of user levels of
technical comprehension
Understanding and knowledge of how to use various
presentation techniques for conveying technical information
Ability co-ordinate translation of documentation into
other languages (e.g., French, Spanish).
Familiarity with: Windows 95/98 environment; MS Office
package; Adobe PageMaker and FrameMaker packages; Corel Draw; Adobe
Acrobat and the creation and editing of Adobe .pdf documents; other
software packages as determined from time to time
