Thank you all for your numerous and wonderful responses! It makes me feel
good to know that so many people care, have opinions, insights, etc. I
dont' have time tonight to respond to each of you, but I thought I'd
quickly try to address some points that were raised.
* The *culture* here means a lot to me because I did the suit and tie
thing for so long. Here I can were whatever I want, listen to gothic rock
on my pc, work with bright, vibrant people from a diverse section of
backgrounds, and I'm in network engineering, which is a field that really
appeals to me. I've worked in too many hell holes, and I don't take things
like this for granted.
* Approaching my manager: At this point, the VP of Engineering is my
manager -- I'm reporting directly to him. Unfortunateley, our division is
now over 110 people and he has a lot to do. I have brought this review
issue up every single month since month 12 with a director, the VP's
assistant, and the VP. No response. I spoke with HR. They side with me,
but if I make it formal, I stand to really burn bridges. So, yes, mgmt has
heard about it every month for the past half year.
* Why working so hard? A) I'm a hard worker, highly motivated. B) I've
been promoted three times and my pay HAS increased by about 30% since being
here. C) My boss was fired and they gave me his job IN ADDITION to mine
*temporarily* and the work had to be done. D) I haven't yet learned to
say "No."
* I've turned down so many other opportunities, I'm kicking myself in the
rear right now. However, things look pretty good. I've got four or five
good possibilties on the horizon over the next week or two. We'll see.
* I've also wanted to stick around cause I'm spoiled here. I order
library books for myself whenever I want, no questions asked, regardless of
price. I get whatever hardware I want, software, etc. They send me to
conferences, conventions, school. They pay all of my professional dues
(and I think I belong to something like 10 professional associations), I
get great benefits, comp time, 401K's good, stock's doing great, it's close
to where I live, I get to build my own doc department and shape it in my
image (and I'd probably get to add 3 more within the next 6-9 months). I
have responsibilties. I interface with the CEO and SR VPs on a regular
basis on large, enterprise-wide projects. I wouldn't get that at a lot of
other companies....
Again, thanks for all of the responses! I'll try to write each of you
back, but because of my job, I tend to get close to 1,000 emails a day, and
