Subject:Re. Strongly recommends? From:"Geoff Hart (by way of \"Eric J. Ray\" <ejray -at- raycomm -dot- com>)" <ght -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA> Date:Wed, 19 Aug 1998 06:03:45 -0600
Jennifer Hines, worrying about translation problems, wondered whether
alternatives exist to "strongly recommends". Actually, I think the
solution is not to look for synonyms but rather to call a spade a
spade: if you really do strongly recommend something, simply make it
an imperative, and follow it with an explanation of the consequences
for not following that command. Then trust readers to make the
obvious choice (and if they don't, they can't blame you for the
results because you told them what will happen). For example:
Turn off all antivirus programs before installing the XXX software.
Failure to do so generally results in damage to some of the files
that must be installed and subsequently the need to reinstall the XXX
software.
Sure, some people are going to blithely go ahead and ignore your
recommendation, but at least no one can say you didn't warn them.
