TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Having worked under contract for OSI, I can second that, Also, they
are a Framemaker shop, and therefore the talent is even more highly
recruitable. No one is going to take $40/k in Folsom when they can
get $60k in Sacramento and $80k in the "Silly Conehead Valley."
They probably cannot get a contractor for $40/hr. The nature of OSI's
product is that they need people experienced in networking--the nature
of the market they pursue most vigorously, telecom. network operators,
requires lots of telecom. experience. The intersection of these two
is in a *very* high rent district!

No offense, but he may be leaving because of the low pay. Mid-40's for
California isn't very much money. Come to think of it, mid-40's for a
senior technical writer isn't very good compensation for anyone who lives
in a large, metropolitan area, especially for areas on the East and West
coasts.
